Robert Fusco, R.Ph.
OmniCare
Long-Term Care
Pharmacy Drug Surveillance

Robert Fusco is president of the New Jersey Long-Term Care Pharmacy Providers Association and vice president for Government affairs for OmniCare in the State of New Jersey. OmniCare is a provider of drugs for long-term care facilities.

Mr. Fusco reviewed and discussed the process through which OmniCare develops its formulary with regard to concerns about drug safety. Among concerns that must be addressed are the safety of medications in ill and elderly populations and the various types of insurance plans that cover medication therapy. He reviewed seventeen therapeutic groups of drugs, keying on advantages and disadvantages of the medications involved in each. In assessing safety, particular attention is given to life-threatening side effects, dosing, costs, and blackbox warnings.
Mr. Fusco’s overall conclusion was that medicine should build algorithms to get the best product to each patient.
