policy in action. The health care industry is regulated
in many ways by all levels of government and by private
accreditation organizations and specialty societies. Law
and regulation shape every aspect of the way health care

A major provision of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA)
is the creation of a new prescription drug benefit under
Medicare Part D. This will affect all stakeholders involved
in healthcare, not solely those limited to seniors. As
a result these groups are attempting to shape the implementation
as well as develop strategies for dealing with the MMA

The greatest challenges facing our health care system
is serving the needs of the growing senior population without
bankrupting the federal government or other payers. This
will require development of new systems of care that are
patient-centered, preventative, integrated, and utilize
an interdisciplinary approach.

While community living is now a centerpiece of mental
health policy, its implementation has been problematic
and offers numerous challenges for those interested in
the economic, social and psychiatric well being of persons
with severe mental illness. Along with this concern has
come the realization that providing effective community
mental health services requires a better understanding
of how these services, and the individuals receiving these
services, interact with other public systems, particularly
in the areas of health, housing, and criminal justice. more...

Economic analysis of hospitals, health care delivery,
and burden of illness issues yields insights into current
approaches to financing and organization of clinic services,
generating new policy options. These analyses are particularly
critical in low income countries and in areas of advanced
countries where people suffering from diabetes and chronic
disease are served by public entities with limited resources.
